In the heart of Porto, this contemporary apartment is a fuss-free base to call home. Our favourite feature – and yours too, we reckon – is the private balcony. Boasting views across the city, it's an excellent spot to savour a glass of port wine after sightseeing and watch the sun go down. Both bedrooms are roomy and bright, although the fifth guest will have to sleep on the sofa bed in the living area. Location-wise, you're not far from the shops on Rua de Santa Catarina or the buzz of downtown. Also nearby is Trindade Metro station for adventures further afield.

Home truths:
*At full capacity, one guest will sleep on the sofa bed in the living area. Please let your host know in advance if you'll need to use it.
*Given the home's central spot, expect to hear some street noise throughout your stay. Light sleepers might want to pack earplugs.
*There isn't a washing machine here, but there are launderettes within walking distance.
*There's a desk in the main bedroom if you plan to work from home during your stay.
*You'll need to collect the keys at the host's welcome centre.
*This apartment is in a commercial building, so it may lack some soul.
