Ballintubbert House & Garden

Vacation Rental in Laois, Ireland

Property Overview

A short stay at Ballintubbert is a luxuriant, grounding & enlightening respite. The former home of cinematic greats Sir John Hurt & Sebastian Shaw, the birthplace of poet laureate C. Day-Lewis, Ballintubbert's rich theatrical & literary history is inspirational while calmative.

The historic House and gardens have gained much recognition and have been aptly described as 'An enchanting work of art – intimate & extraordinarily peaceful.'

Guests are met with a warm introductory welcome and have the support of our discreet ever–ready house staff should they need them.
Indeed, with fourteen acres of dramatically formed landscape adorned with a myriad of charming garden 'rooms', Ballintubbert is a unique journey of delightful surprises. Of particular note is the Sir Edwin Lutyens design water garden complimented by Gertrude Jekyll-style planting schemes.

There are wildflower meadows & woodlands in contrast to the lime walks that flank a hundred metre canal in the more classical gardening tradition. With the exclusive use of the historic manor home and garden cottages, we invite you to stay awhile and replenish your soul.

The School House
Circa 1785, this comfortable & private residence is a short stroll through the Rose Garden & is the original school. Close to Ballintubbert church, it is also the site of ancient pilgrimages to take the healing water. Today this mineral rich water still flows from the well in the garden of the School House. Stylish self-catering accommodation for up to ten guests between five double bedrooms with additional beds available. The property benefits from having a playground, making it ideal for groups and young family.

The Garden Wing
Nestled behind the Shackleton Garden, yet close to Ballintubbert House lies the Garden Wing - historically the HQ for Ballintubbert's gardeners. Poet laureate C. Day–Lewis was born in these Garden Sheds in 1904. Harmoniously restored, the Garden Wing today are a series of well-appointed rustic chic en-suite double bedrooms, each with an individual aesthetic.

"Garden Visit"
My wife and I went to visit the garden on the one day a week it is open and really enjoyed the garden. It is arranged in '' rooms'' radiating out from the house giving a sense that its a larger space than in reality. We were the only visitors on the day and that added to the experience. We had a nice long chat to the young woman who was gardening on the day and got a lot of history about the gardens and House.
