Martinstown House: Kildare

Luxury self catering rental in the heart of Ireland's racing country. Martinstown House is a hidden gem of understated luxury, set in the rich, leafy landscape of the famous Curragh in County Kildare.

Built at the end of the 18th century as a love nest by the Duke of Leinster, the ambience of the property retains its romantic character.

The gothic style cottage is surrounded by mature parkland, beech hedges and magnificent walled gardens.

The charm and creativity that is evident in the landscaping of Martinstown is essential to its appeal as a luxury retreat. Among the joyful aspects of the grounds is the working farm complete with hens, cattle, sheep and even horses.

Other delightful highlights are a formal Italian garden with flower beds, a rose garden with sundial and an apple orchard. The heart of the garden is the organic vegetable plot.

The exquisite level of attention and detail is reflected in the interior of the cottage. Each of the six bedrooms have been individually designed and have stunning views of the environment.

As befits a manor house of this vintage, there are two elegant reception rooms for quiet and sumptuous relaxation. Both the Morning Room and the Drawing room are furnished and decorated with antique furniture and fine artworks. The air of indulgence is enhanced with open fires and huge sofas.

The Dining Room which features a long antique mahogany dining table, side boards and beautiful silver candelabra is intimate and romantic.

The kitchen is spacious and comfortable and affords all the comfort and tone of a hospitable country kitchen, with a range, gas cooker, and a big farmhouse table.

Should guests be able to drag themselves away from the retreat, there is plenty to do nearby.

The Curragh, the capital of Irish flat racing, is close by and there are several prestigious golf courses within easy reach. Kildare Cathedral and Round Tower, the National Stud and the Japanese Gardens are a short drive away. Dublin City and Dublin airport are both within an hour’s drive.

"Magical Getaway"
I'm lucky enough to have visited Martinstown House on three occasions so far. We attended a wedding there in the summer of 2017 and we really loved the place. There was a great atmosphere, from the ceremony in the outdoor stage area to the meal in the marquee to the evening by the firepit. There were so many original and personal touches throughout.

After that we went back for an overnight stay. The staff are fantastic and make you feel like part of the family and the food is phenomenal. It was the food and the friendliness that brought us back for an evening with the Feasting Society. That was a really special night. Again, great company, amazing hosts and I can't rate the food highly enough - every ingredient was so carefully thought through. Loved all 9 courses and the whole evening was so atmospheric.

We love the grounds, love the people and, even if it wasn't for those things, we'd keep coming back for the food alone! :D

Hoping to go back this summer and try out their new bell tents.

"Dream wedding"
Martinstown is a charming location and enchanting venue. The grounds are wonderfully kept, the food is outstanding and the service is absolutely superb. I was attending a wedding, but I would return with my family in a heartbeat. It truly is a magical place, fairy doors and all. It’s a win all around!

"Another magical stay in Martinstown"
I have had the absolute pleasure of dining and staying at Martinstown on a number of occasions over the past three years. Edward and his family must be congratulated for their outstanding hospitality and careful maintenance of this beautiful historic country house. It is full of charm and comfort, surrounding by gorgeous gardens and countryside. Dining is a delight such is the standard of the food served with pride and passion. I stayed in the same en-suite bedroom on each occasion and slept like a baby. Continued success to the family who deliver an excellent slice of genuine Irish hospitality.
