The Gardener’s Cottage

The Gardener’s Cottage, set in the corner of the walled garden, scarcely a stone throw from the main house, was the home of the Head Gardener and his family. The Head Gardener had command over the productive and ornamental gardens during the 18 and 19 centuries.

This comfortable two story house set in such close proximity to the landlord’s residence is indicative of the crucial role the Head Gardeners played in the economy of the estate over several hundred years.
 
A continuous supply of seasonal vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers for the family, their staff and their guests was a perennial requirement in an era long before modern shops and markets. Every necessity for the kitchen and the dining room from humble root crops to exotic fruits such as grapes, melons and pineapples as well as floral decorations were in regular supply under the direction of the Head Gardener and his team of under gardeners, journeymen and labourers.
 


This charming and comfortable cottage has been refurbished and enhanced to provide an extensive suite for guests, with views over the parkland and the lake to one side and to the productive vegetable garden and flower borders on the other. A spacious living room with two fireplaces give access to a private patio. Adjoining is a small kitchen and a cloak room; upstairs, there are two bathrooms and a large airy bedroom. Off the bedroom, a balcony overlooks the walled garden and a stairway leads to a hot tub on the private terrace.
