Christmas's Shane MacGowan has risen to the spirits in the sky, and the magical "Fairytale of New York" is a beautiful reminder of his heartening, unreserved voice and spirit.
"In the Drunk Tank" has been lauded as the best opening line of a song, and this perfectly crafted Pogues track is a bona fide Christmas Cracker.
Shane MacGowan and Jem Finer, dreamed up the fantastical lyrics, unaware their show-stopper would become one of the greatest tunes ever.
Originally from Tipperary, his family moved to London in the early 60s, and Shane became part of the London Irish music scene.
"You never forget that you originally came from Ireland. There are lots of Irish pubs and clubs in London, so there was always Irish music in bars and on jukeboxes."
MacGowan later started the London-Irish band The Pogues, a concoction of traditional Irish and English Punk music. Shane often spoke about how he missed his duet partner Kirsty McColl following her fatal diving accident in 2000, and he later dedicated the blockbuster to her.
