And once you've had enough of topping up your tan for the day, there's a vast games room on the lower level, complete with a Playstation, pool table, table tennis and table football – plenty to keep everyone entertained throughout the day. On your doorstep, the quiet residential neighbourhood of Garajau guarantees a peaceful stay. Follow the path down the hill to the statue of Christ. It bears more than a passing resemblance to Rio's iconic Christ the Redeemer, though it actually predates it by four years. From here, board the cable car for a gravity-defying ride down the cliff to the pebble beach, which offers a stunning spot to swim in the sea or enjoy a bite to eat in the seafront restaurant.

For a greater choice of eateries, plus boutiques and museums, the compact capital of Funchal is a ten-minute drive, while Palheiro Golf Course offers challenging terrain to novices and veterans alike, approximately 10km away.
