Outside: Patsys Cottage is like stepping back in time while also experiencing luxury. It has been lovingly restored in resent years from farm building to beautiful and unusual thatched cottage. The building dates back to pre 1820. Located down a boreen (small country road) you can walk down past the house to the old Clifden to Galway railway line and on into the forest. The property is located just 4km from Oughterard which is the gateway to Connemara while also being just 40 min drive from Galway City – the perfect location for exploring.
Oughterard is famous for its Salmon and Trout fishing and is also the start of the Western Way walking trail. Each year the village holds an International Mayfly festival. You can rent fishing gear or if you would like an even more relaxed stay, enjoy a boat trip on Lough Corrib out to Inchagoill Island. Make sure to check out Powers Bar and the Boat Inn for great food. Grab a coffee and browse the great selection at O Sullivans shop.
Right next door to the cottage you will find the Glengowla Mines and farm experience – a great way to spend a few hours panning for gold or learning to shear sheep. If you are into mountain biking, head up the forest track or just 5 mins away you have the Derroura Mountain Bike Trail
The property is a lovely step back from it all. Enjoy the chickens and bee hives while sipping a glass of wine in the beautiful outdoor area.
Inside: This cottage has been finished to a very high standard with tasteful fixings and fixtures that suit this historical property. You enter through a beautiful low door with an original stain glass window from the local church. The ceilings go right up the roof and are timber clad giving an even more cosy feel. All the stunning timber inside and out is locally sourced. In the kitchen you will find everything to cook during your stay – help yourself to the organic veg growing in the garden and of course the fresh eggs from the chickens. Cosy up with a book or a board game in front of the stove adding even more atmosphere to beautiful cottage.

It’s remote but not far from a small town for anything you might need. The facilities were brilliant the garden area was amazing, we spent the entirety of our time out there either sat around the fire or in the sauna/hot tub. Gerry the host was fantastic and gave us a lovely welcome. I could not recommend staying here highly enough, we were all incredibly sad when our stay was over.
