Within a ten-minute walk, you could be sinking your feet into a white-sand beach, ascending the 199 Steps for sweeping views, exploring the ruins of Whitby Abbey or feasting on fish and chips down by the harbour. The town is also a gateway for scenic hikes in North Yorkshire’s unspoilt moors, dales and forests. All of this diversion will suit couples and families looking for a cosy place to escape city life. So curl up on the sofa with a good book – Bram Stoker’s Dracula, perhaps, which is closely associated with the town. If it’s warm, open up the patio doors for a breath of fresh sea air and uncork a bottle of wine to add a carefree flair to your cooking. The kitchen is smart and well equipped, though if you don’t fancy playing chef, Whitby’s pubs and seafood restaurants are just a stone's throw away.

* Even though the town is accessible by train and most sights are within walking distance, we recommend a car for accessing local hotspots
* There's a designated parking space for one car – ask your host for advice if you’re coming in two vehicles
* There are plenty of local bus routes – the X4 takes you to beautiful coastal villages like Sandsend, Runswick Bay and Staithes – the X93 travels along the coast to Scarborough – the 95 route travels through quaint villages, such as Grosmont and Lealholm
* You might want to pack extra changes of clothes as there’s no washing machine
