We arrived at Troopers Barn where the owner Marianne had put in place as a welcome, chocolate, wine and a home made Victoria sponge which was delicious. Our family who joined us from various parts of the country were impressed with the accommodation and the location being about 3 miles from Craven Arms in a quiet scenic part of Shropshire and midway between Ludlow and Ironbridge about 10 miles away. An alpaca farm was next door and you could even take them for a walk.
Unfortunately we had 7 days of rain and apart from a walk along the picturesque Cardingmill Valley we were mostly confined to sightseeing but there is much to see and it didn’t dampen our enthusiasm but it was nice to come back to the warm spacious Troopers Barn and indulge in the hot tub for a while. We will return someday, hopefully with better weather. There are some super old inns for dining out within a short drive if you didn’t want to take advantage of the excellent kitchen facilities as it is very well appointed.

We are currently staying at Troopers Barn with family members from across the country (the furthest travelling from Southampton) We made the decision to travel despite the weather, as the owners had sent an email to advise that they would be around to provide any support required. We are so glad that we braved the snow as we have had a fantastic weekend. Some members of our party were diverted because of an accident and became stuck on a difficult piece of road, including myself, partner and 8 week old baby, but as soon as we called Marianne and Stuart, they reassured us that they would come and find us and take us to the property. Stuart then returned to our cars, moved them to a place of safety and then drove us to collect them Saturday morning once conditions had improved. Some of our party decided to travel Saturday morning in light of the conditions becoming worse late Friday night so nobody had to miss out on the fun!

We have had a great weekend and made use of the sledges provided in the games room! Sitting in a lovely warm hot tub in minus temperatures was also great fun!!! There was a homemade chocolate cake, bottle of wine and fresh flowers on the table when we arrived and the cottage is absolutely beautiful. The rooms are immaculate and finished to a lovely standard. I would highly recommend Westhope retreats and we will definitely be back (hopefully it will be warmer so we can make use of the BBQ!!)

Many thanks again to Marianne and Stuart for all of their help and ensuring that we had the best weekend! Xx

We spent a fantastic weekend here with friends to celebrate a special birthday.

The cottage is spacious, stylish and well furnished with a perfect mix of modern and traditional; it has everything you could possibly need and the personal touches of flowers, wine and cake made it that extra bit special. We were very appreciative of the basic provisions too, such as loo roll, soap and cooking oil. The cottage was clean, apart from a few cobwebs (in an old converted barn this is inevitable) but we would have benefited from having some sort of kitchen cleaner available in the cupboard in order to aid the cleaning up after food had been cooked, eaten and prepared.

The cottages are located in a remote hamlet near to Craven Arms - as a consequence, you have no phone signal, so keeping in touch with loved ones back home is reliant upon the WiFi; unfortunately while we were there we did experience some connection issues. That said, Marianne was extremely helpful and explained what to do if the WiFi signal goes - she was helpful (and friendly) before and during our stay. We didn't move our cars throughout the weekend and instead enjoyed the various walks that are easily accessed from the complex, thus making the most of the stunning scenery.

The only thing to be aware of is that the cottages are all adjacent to eachother in a small complex, and whilst the back garden is fenced off in this cottage (resulting in Troopers Barn enjoying privacy where the hot tub is) other cottages (and hot tubs) are overlooked, so if you want to experience complete privacy this is not the place for you. Also, we found that the curfew of 10pm for the hot tub a little inconvenient - other places we have stayed as a group, due to being private, have had no time restrictions with hot tub use.

If you did want to explore further then there are plenty of places easily accessible by car (Ludlow and Ironbridge for example), but as this is an area we are very familiar with, we chose to 'stay put'.

I would definitely recommend a stay here.

If you are looking for a venue for a large family celebration, then look no further! This cottage along with the other 4 are all finished beautifully and packed with character. The provisions in the kitchen were excellent and the home made cake and wine were a lovely special touch! The games barn or the 'party room' as we called it - is where all 38 of us joined together in the evenings to celebrate my 40th birthday, which was ideal and then the hot tubs were the cherry on the cake. Set in an idyllic location surrounded by countryside and has lots of lovely walks to blow the cobwebs away! The owner, marianne was so helpful throughout the lead up to the weekend- answering all the little questions I had. I can't recommend this place enough - don't think twice about booking your break here.. you won't be disappointed.

We booked Troopers Barn (and The Wain House - see Westhope Country Retreat website for details of all the properties in the barn conversion) for a weekend for a large family celebration. The location is very quiet and peaceful, a mile or so on a very minor road off the B4368. The nearest pub is about 3 miles and shops about 6 miles away. Marianne, whose place it is, is a lovely person with a warm welcome and capable management for whatever you might need. That welcome is enhanced by the delightful home baked cake (mother-in-law's department I believe), the bottle of wine, and the impressive flower arrangement on the table waiting for you inside. The barns themselves have been converted to a high standard in a country style with modern en suite facilities. Troopers Barn is spacious (18 of us for dinner on Saturday night were easily accommodated) and all the bedrooms were a good size with comfy beds. The large kitchen is very well equipped including little things like a supply of tea/coffee/sugar, salt and pepper, dishwasher tablets, etc available which you don't necessarily expect. It's all been well thought out to ensure you enjoy your stay. The hot tubs, a new experience for some of our family, went down a storm and were great fun. It would be easy just to chill out in the place for a few days but there's plenty to do not far away particularly if you like outdoor pursuits or visiting castles and interesting places such as Much Wenlock. A couple of other points to mention. Whilst you'll be lucky to get a mobile network signal, the wifi works quite well (and there's a landline in the property if you need to phone). We also used the catering service (Oak Apple Catering) on a supply only basis and can recommend that as well. Food was delivered pre-cooked/prepared with instructions about heating times etc.. Most importantly, the quality of the food was very good and quite reasonably priced. Overall a lovely place with just about everything you could wish for and you would almost certainly enjoy a stay there.

Stayed in Troopers Barn - the biggest of the properties in this complex. Plenty of space for 8 adults, 1 child and 2 infants (cots and high charis provided). Very spacious and well maintained. Marianne and her team are to be commended. Nice touch having the flowers, wine a a scrummy cake on arrival.
Need to take care along the windy, single track (with passing places) road leading to Westhope College and the property - nearly took out the postie one day!
Recommend The Plough at Wistanson for a great meal.

Stayed here in early December for 3 nights (Fri-Mon) to celebrate my mum's surprise 70th birthday with family. 22 in all ranging from a few weeks old to 70, oh and a dog! We stayed in Troopers Barn and also the 3 bed houses, Wain and Turnip and it was absolutely amazing, and between us all it was a bargain too. Depending on your sat nav depended on whether you ended up down a farm road but we got there in the end. The host Marianne was fantastic, from the booking stage until departure. There was the most gorgeous homemade cake, chocolates and bottle of wine on arrival (in each house!). We organised a Tesco delivery for the afternoon too which all went smoothly considering it is out in the sticks a bit. Everything was spotlessly clean and spacious and there wasn't a single appliance/implement that wasn't available. We bought our own dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid etc but even that wasn't necessary. We stayed on a very windy and fresh weekend but we didn't need to use the lovely log fire. We made full use of the hot tub which everyone loved. The kids used the communal games room although not for long as it was quite chilly in there. We basically entertained ourselves for the whole time by doing lots of eating, drinking and playing games. We went for Sunday lunch at The Green Dragon in Church Stretton which I can highly recommend (only a 10 minute drive away). Mum had the best surprise ever seeing family she doesn't get to see that often. It was fabulous and you won't be disappointed. My sister has booked again with friends and no doubt we will do another family event there, maybe in the warmer months though to enjoy the outside a bit more.

We have just had the best weekend staying in Troopers Barn and the Olde Cowshed.
Marianne is such a great host. My husband was thrilled to be taken on a tour of the land with Brian on his Mule!
The accommodation is first class, our cottage was set up for 17 people to eat comfortably. Lots of bathrooms so no waiting for a shower! Plenty of seating, too, DVD player, games, books. Kitchen is great, very well equipped including a beautiful cake on arrival and wine!
The hot tub was a real highlight. The younger generation made use of the gym and games room. We walked in the muddy fields, ran along Wenlock Edge with our dog, visited local towns of Ludlow and Shrewsbury.
Our only dilemma is when to come back....

We particularly liked the excellent location of Trooper's Barn and how spacious the property was.
Our 11 year old daughter particularly liked all the mirrors (especially the glamour mirror that lights up) and the hot tub.

Trooper's Barn is perfect for a family getaway. Plenty of walks and beautiful countryside to explore and only a 15 minute drive away to the nearest town.
Nestled in Westhope, it catered for all our needs; family time, disabled access, small children, older children with the games room, pets and a hot tub for the adults.
The staff and owner were very friendly and pleasant. We highly recommend this place and would definitely go back.

Stayed with a party of 11, which included 5 children. We all agreed we had a wonderful stay. The barn lacked nothing!! It was spotlessly clean and very well maintained. We loved the hot tub and children loved the outdoor shower ( they've never been so clean) beautiful walks and scenery and not too far away from places to eat and shop. Highly recommended

The cottage was lovely and warm with oodles of hot water. The hot tub was a real bonus! The lounge seating was brilliant and the TVs, games room, gym and WiFi were great. Can't understand why it isn't rated 5 Star! The owners were lovely and helpful. Can't recommend Trooper's Barn enough. A beautiful setting for our walking group and great weather (just lucky on that one) made for a great week away.

The little touches such as the flowers, wine, cake and milk in the fridge were so welcoming. The decor and furnishing were lovely and we felt we were staying in someone's home, not just a let-cottage. It was a girlie weekend, and we have been going away for 20 years now, and this was one of the best!

We went for a family big birthday celebration. Eight adults, four children and a tiny baby with the older ones staying all week. The living/dining area is very spacious. The kitchen is huge and has everything you could need. Everyone enjoyed the hot tub. There was a field leading to woodland walks for our dog. We were all impressed with the standard of the barn conversion and would definitely recommend it to our friends. Lots to do in Ironbridge and several NT properties nearby.
