Area Norton is a village just two miles from Stockton-on-Tees which is famous for being the site of the first railway line from Stockton to Darlington. Norton is situated just off the A19 and is an ideal base for discovering the North York Moors, County Durham and a number of seaside towns. Just a short drive away is Great Ayton which is famous for being the boyhood home of Captain Cook, and is also mentioned in the Domesday Book. Great Ayton has two village greens, with a river running alongside, making it a popular picnic spot in the summer months. The city of Durham is just a half hour drive and is one of the jewels in England’s crown. Dominated by the historic centre, a World Heritage Site, the city is home to magnificent Durham Cathedral, with its breathtaking vaulted ceiling and splendid architecture. The cathedral, the final resting place of the Venerable Bede, is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in the whole of Europe. Durham Castle stands side by side with the cathedral, on a prominent hilltop site, encircled by the wooded slopes of the River Wear below. A superb base for exploring this historic region.
