Area
Crowborough is a well-known market town in East Sussex and is home to a number of writers, actors, and artists who have drawn inspiration from the area's beauty. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote the Sherlock Holmes mysteries and spent the last 23 years of his life in the town, and whose statue can be found at Crowborough Cross, are among those who have done so. Visitors will also notice references to the books in the town's street names, such Watson Way and Sherlock Shaw, as well as the Cafe Baskerville on Broadway. The town has a decent selection of stores and restaurants, and a monthly farmers' market sells fresh local food. Crowborough also hosts a number of traditional English fairs and fetes throughout the year. Ancient Ashdown Forest, located in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is next to this market town's boundary. The forestland, which was once a Norman hunting area, has a long history and was utilised by the monarchy and nobles up until the Tudor era, including Henry VIII, who held a hunting lodge at Bolebroke Castle, and Anne Boleyn, who kept a castle close by called Hever. The presently calm open heathland, which spans more than 9 square miles, is one of the largest public access sites in South East England. A. A. Milne, who lived on its northern edge and frequently took his son, Christopher Robin, for walks in the forest, has stated that Ashdown Forest served as the inspiration for the Hundred Acre Wood in his Winnie the Pooh books. This region is abundant in wildlife that is protected by the federal government and has streams, ponds, woodlands, and common land for grazing. This region of Sussex will enchant people who love the outdoors and may be explored year-round due to its constantly changing landscape.
