While the architects have carefully retained those all-important historical features (don't get us started on that magnificent chequered marble entrance and sweeping staircase), everywhere else has been masterfully reimagined for modern living. Think designer kitchen, oh-so-luxurious marble-clad bathroom, and a gloriously clutter-free, boutique-style bedroom to bank your beauty sleep beneath it's lofty ceilings. While over in the light-filled living space, the bistro table with views of the terracotta rooftops outside is a charming spot to savour freshly brewed coffees and customary pastel de natas as you hatch plans for the day ahead.

When it's finally time to dive into Funchal's atmospheric streets, all the must-sees are within walking distance – starting with the seafront for morning ambles by the marina and lazy afternoons at the newly renovated, see-and-be-seen lido. And with stellar eating and drinking destinations within easy walking distance, including the famous farmer's market, Mercado dos Lavradores, you'll never go hungry here.
