A short drive away, the quaint village of Almáchar is known for its culinary contribution to the local culture. Not only is it known for its currants, but the village is also the home of Andalusian favourite, ajoblanco - a cold soup made from bread, garlic and almonds. In fact, a festival is held in its honour each September. Should you wish to sample this local delicacy, a quick wander of its winding whitewashed streets will unearth several family-run restaurants.

However, between the well-equipped kitchen and the built-in barbecue, there's not much call to leave this idyllic spot, so you might want to stock up on essentials at the supermarkets in Vélez-Málaga before you arrive.
