Orange & Pine: Setúbal

Nestled between the village of Carvalhal and the sugary white beaches of the coast, this sundrenched villa is enviously located for exploring the bohemian region of Herdade da Comporta. Surrounded by pine forests and luscious gardens, we can’t picture a better place to switch off, relax, and enjoy a slower pace of life.

The traditional villa is beautifully bright, from the sparkling white facade to the natural light that floods through the large sliding doors. The sunlight accentuates the home’s popping details – the vibrant artwork, colourful knick knacks, original wooden beamed ceilings, and terracotta floors. These traditionally Portuguese elements bring a homeliness to the villa, perfect for a family to make their own memories in. The mezzanine is testament to that, providing a place of comfort for the little ones to read, watch TV, and play games.

We love the interior’s cheer and vitality, but we can’t get enough of the sunny garden. While the interior has bucolic charm, the outside space has drawn inspiration from Comporta’s hippy-chic vibe. Spend mornings enjoying a coffee around the bistro table, watching the early birds dance around the pine trees, before deciding who gets the first go on the hammock. Not to worry, whoever doesn’t get the hammock gets the daybed-style round chair. Evenings are beautifully spent grilling up local produce on the traditional brick barbecue, before tucking in alfresco around the rustic, bench-style table, washed down with sangria.

When it comes to exploring the area, you’re within walking distance or a short drive from Praia de Carvalhal or Praia dos Brejos. The area is known for its fantastic surfing, which is just as enjoyable whether you’re watching the surfers or getting on the waves yourself. Beachfront restaurants stretch all the way down the coast, providing the perfect spot for a spot of lunch. And if you want to explore the region by land, the idyllic villages of Carvalhal, Comporta, Brejos da Carregueira, Carrasqueira, Possanco, Muda and Sol Troia are all within easy reach.

Home truths:

*If you're travelling by plane, Lisbon Airport is 77 miles away – there's also a train station 24 miles away
