Old Barracks: Cork

Built in Georgian times, this recently restored former Garda Barracks is one of the oldest historic buildings in Rosscarberry and is now adapted to accommodate from two to twelve self-catering guests.

Situated in the centre of the village, guests are invited to take a step back in time and imagine hundreds of years of extraordinary times in “The Barracks”. The atmosphere today is surely very different as comfort and relaxation are paramount in this lovely spacious property. A warm welcome awaits you plus a generous “welcome pack” to ease you into the start of your West Cork holiday by the sea.

What Awaits You Inside:

The Old Garda Barracks distinguishes itself as the only stone-fronted building in the Market Square. Through the imposing scarlet front door, and in keeping with its original features, the entrance hall leads to a traditional-style parlour on the left with a wood-burning stove set into its original fireplace. To the right of the entrance hall is a spacious twin-bedded room with an attractive open fire and original wooden floor. Both rooms overlook the Market Square.

The passageway then leads to the rear of the property featuring a utility area, a fully equipped kitchen (with all new modern appliances), and a spacious dining room (seats 12+). A patio door in the dining room opens onto a courtyard garden. The garden is safely enclosed with picnic table, barbecue and space for children to play.

The first floor is accessed from the stunning original staircase in the entrance hall to a family bathroom on the right at the back of the building with bath, shower, etc. and two double-bedrooms, one each side of the staircase to the front of the building overlooking the Market Square. There is a large landing with table, chair and reading material to relax in or write postcards home. Across from the family bathroom, to the rear of the house, is a newly built extension (adjacent to and connected to the main house) containing the master bedroom, one twin-bedded bedroom and a second bathroom with views of the garden courtyard.

The Old Garda Barrack’s period features can be spotted in some ceiling details, cornicing, flooring and fireplaces. The owner has carefully paid attention to decorating with sensitivity to its historic past whilst ensuring every modern convenience is catered to. The bedrooms are particularly cosy and comfortable with old-fashioned touches such as lovely, colourful, hand-crocheted coverlets, cushions and rugs on old wooden floorboards. With such careful decoration and restoration, the integrity of the entire building has been preserved.

"Gail is amazing! Old Library stay was perfect!"
We stayed in Gail's Old Library option. We were on a hen party and there were twelve of us. Gail suggested activities for us and they were super. We started off with boxercise and then arrived back to the house where afternoon tea was perfectly laid out. Rosscarbery is a buzzing spot. We were a group of not many drinkers so caterers were organised Beano & Ginger and the food was absolutely delicious. The house was lovely with a spacious outdoor area for entertaining and in the late hours we sat around the sitting room which has plenty of sofas to fit us all and we played games. The next morning there was pancakes scones and yoghurts there for us. Then we went to the lagoon activity centre. Absolutely super time and Gail and her family are nothing short of superstars!

The Barracks is a lovely home in county cork. Comfortable beds and plenty of living space in the dining room, sitting room and kitchen. Decor is a little quaint but this adds to its charm. Some gorgeous touches such as welcome cakes and fresh eggs. Would definitely recommend to others looking to stay in the area.

"Excellent Location"
The location was ideal, right in the middle of the town. The house was huge and the host was accommodating.
