Area Set on the boulder-strewn River Dee and with a wonderful mountainous backdrop, the pretty town of Llangollen offers a good selection of shops, pubs and restaurants, and is home to the internationally famous musical Eisteddfod, held annually. There is so much to do - take a horse-drawn boat trip down the canal, or tackle the walking or cycling routes up the Castell Dinas Bran, then enjoy the view from the top. For a more sedate day trip, head to the National Trust properties of Chirk Castle or Erddig.
