“Friendliest staff anywhere”
Spent a night in Lough Erne last Friday. Played golf on Friday afternoon followed by dinner in Catalina Restaurant and overnight in a lake view lodge.
The golf deal included a buggy and food before the off. The menu gave good choice and was more extensive than the usual bap and soup.
The Nick Faldo course is challenging with a choice of 5 tees (including the red pins) on each hole. The back black tees are particularly challenging and for only the longer hitters. Greens were very true albeit a bit slow.
The food in the Catalina was simply superb. Locally sourced produce prepared with skill and presented as art.
The waiting staff in the Catalina were really charming, probably the most charming I have encountered. The restaurant does lack some leadership or training which shows in small ways that challenge the 5 star rating.
Examples include failing to bring wine until main course and then only when asked, serving gents before the ladies, the teaspoon on the saucer pointing away from the guest. Nothing earth shattering but they do take from the 5-star expectations.
The lakeside lodge accommodated four with a bedroom on each floor of the tower. The bathroom was a good size, with bath and rainforest shower. It is equipped with fridge, microwave and sink. Surprisingly, I note there is no room service to the lodges from the hotel.
Breakfast on Saturday was also a delight, albeit with waitressing quirks. A buffet choice of cereals, fruits and cold meats supported a served hot choice selected from the extensive menu.
All in all an enjoyable break in a very well equipped property.
