Area
The village of Abbey is located on the northern bank of Lough Rea, 7 miles west of Portumna and 11 miles south-east of Galway City. The village of Abbey, which has won Ireland's Tidy Towns competition for County Galway three years in a row, has two pubs, a grocery, and an 11th-century monastery that gave the village its name. While Loughrea, a nearby mediaeval town, has several shops and taverns, two four-star hotels, an 18-hole golf course, and a lake known for its fishing, Portumna is close by and offers good fishing and watersports. The medium-sized market town of Gort is located between the Slieve Aughty Mountains and the Burren to the south on the Galway to Ennis Road. Irish music has a long history in the area, and many pubs host performances at night. This is a great starting point for exploring, as both the cosmopolitan delights of Galway City and the well-known beach at Salthill are accessible by car.

Region
Towering cliffs stand next to vast stretches of golden sand, whilst vast mountain ranges cradle cool, low-lying lakes. The Galway region epitomises the term ‘great outdoors’; with fantastic walking and cycling and exhilarating water sports.
