1 The Old Methodist Chapel: North Yorkshire

Holiday home
1 The Old Methodist Chapel is a fantastic conversion of a Victorian chapel in the heart of the North York Moors National Park. Over four floor, this property sleeps eight in four bedrooms, a second floor double, a second floor king-size double, a second floor twin and a third floor double. There is also a second floor bathroom, a ground floor shower room, a first floor kitchen with dining area and a first floor sitting room with open fire. Outside there is a patio area, and off road parking for two cars. 1 The Old Methodist Chapel is a unique base for a cottage holiday.

Area
Perfectly positioned for touring both the Moors and the Coast, the picturesque village of Rosedale Abbey is situated in the heart of the North York Moors National Park. Located in Rosedale, a beautiful valley of sweeping hillsides and breathtaking views, this lovely little settlement is surrounded by wonderful moorland countryside and offers walks in every direction. The village is home to the remains of a 12th Century Cistercian Priory - a stone pillar, staircase and sundial are all that remain, which gave the town its unusual name. The village is now largely made up of stone-built cottages clustered around the village green. Packed with local amenities such as shops, tearooms, an art gallery, a glass studio and three old country pubs, there is plenty to do without venturing to nearby Hutton-le-Hole, Ryedale and Kirkbymoorside.

Region
The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.

Amenities
Night storage heaters with open fire. Electric range cooker, microwave, fridge, freezer, washer/dryer, dishwasher, TV with Freeview, video, DVD, WiFi, payphone. Fuel, power and starter pack for fire inc. in rent. Bed linen and towels inc. in rent. Travel cot and highchair on request. Off road parking for 2 cars. Small, front patio area with garden furniture. What a fabulous location and really well kitted out, unique chapel.. I really cannot say enough good things about this property. The communication around it's little quirks allowed us to utilise all of the facilities as intended. Lovely picturesque setting with lots of walks very close by. We will definately be going back.

Really enjoyed our time in the Old Methodist Chapel.. It is an amazing, characterful and comfortable building in a beautiful area. The owner gave us great tips over the phone on local activities. Would definitely stay again.

The location was excellent and the accommodation for our family was spot on.. This was a family get together for my 70th birthday and it was a great success. The surrounding area was great for a hike and the village is really pretty. The pubs round about are all child friendly and there is no shortage of places to eat. Everyone had a superb break away.

What a little gem! I booked this for a 50th birthday celebration with my friends and the minute we started looking for a cottage we were instantly drawn to The Old Methodist Chapel. The day before we arrived a friend informed me that they had stayed there also and told me we wouldn't be disappointed and we certainly weren't. It's such a homely place to stay and as the weather wasn't great on the Friday we lit a fire and settled down for a night of comfort. We all instantly felt at home and after the weekend we all agreed that it would be a place that we would definitely stay at again and we hope (planning permitted) to make this an annual event. Mark (owner) was very helpful when I spoke with him before our stay and full of information on things to do and places eat in the area. I would say we struggled slightly with the range cooker as none of us were use to cooking on a range but that didn't spoil our visit. I would highly recommend The Old Methodist Chapel

Directions to get there were very easy and we had a great family get together weekend.. Kitchen is a great size both for cooking and eating and we loved the two fridges! Bedrooms comfortable and it is helpful being able to have an area for muddy shoes (although we didn’t have any as the weather was beautiful). From booking to arranging the keys, could not have been easier, thank you.

Our party of seven adults all had a wonderful stay at 1 The Old Methodist Chapel at Rosedale Abbey.. The accommodation was first class with a spacious living room and kitchen/dining area. The bedrooms were a good size and had comfortable beds and there was always plenty of hot water whenever required. The range cooker was great for cooked breakfasts and although rather different to conventional cookers we found it easy enough to operate. Whoever carried out the conversion did a great job and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in a lovely village. Thank you to the owner for the bottle of fizz and biscuits which were left for our arrival, a nice touch well appreciated.

Quirky and cosy, well equipped property on four levels. Two good sized fridges in the kitchen, good size freezer and washer/dryer in the boot room. Everon stove (Aga style) was a bit of a challenge but we managed ok. Good size bedrooms with comfy beds (bed linen could do with being upgraded), lovely big kitchen with large farmhouse kitchen table. Beautiful lounge with an open coal fire which was perfect for our Christmas stay? The Christmas decorations and Christmas tree were perfect, even down to putting chocolates on the tree for our small grandchildren. A welcome pack of Champagne and biscuits was much appreciated and we all enjoyed the 'treasure hunt', especially when there was treasure (sweets) at the end of it. The location is stunning and we all had our own version of which window had the best view. The window shapes in the cottage are varied with some being arch, round, stained etc. Our grandchildren loved each morning looking out to see the sheep and horses in the field next to the cottage. We cannot comment on the village facilities as being Christmas most were closed over the time we were there. There is a good size bathroom with a toilet, bath and an electric shower on the 2nd floor, a shower and toilet on the ground floor off the boot room. Attention to detail in regards to cleaning could be improved - big cobwebs, dead flies on window sills. Outside space a little grubby - big cobwebs, dead spiders and flies need sweeping off of the inside of the canopy outside the front door. There are two allocated parking bays outside the cottage.

We had a fabulous family Christmas (4 adults, 2 small children) and all loved the quirky style of the cottage, we have some lovely memories which we will treasure forever, in fact our two little grandchildren didn't want to leave.

We are listing a few little niggles which could be improved upon but by no means did they impact on our stay:

Bedroom on the top floor has a curtain across the door opening (no closing door)
Poor water flow re shower on 2nd floor.
Boot room shower could do with some heat in it, heated towel rail not working, bit of an upgrade would improve this area as it could be a bit smarter and cleaner.
Front door curtain needs replacing, existing one very shabby.

This is a beautiful place in a beautiful location with lots of thought having gone in to what people of all ages would like.. Lovely village with great facilities: pubs and small shops and cafes. However there was a huge expectation, and we were reminded about this throughout the house that we were expected to leave the house as clean and tidy as we found it. There were numerous mops and hoovers throughout the house. However they were two things: it wasn't actually that clean, there were lots of cobwebs and dead flies on windowsills (on the slopes by the beautiful stained glass windows), and secondly they were insistent that we had to leave on time because the house would need to be cleaned!! We had to strip the beds and put all our towels in a pile.
I think if you are going to ask people to do all this this needs to be reflected in the price and you need to pre warn people. Maybe some people would happily do this it if was a bit cheaper. I have certainly never been asked to do this on any of your holidays, or any other self catering holiday.
The information folder in the accommodation was very comprehensive.

What a beautiful characterful accommodation, everything we needed and more for 6 females on a hen weekend.so warm and cosy with the cooker always on and the storage heaters.we couldn't resist having a real log fire the first night but we were so lucky with the weather that we didn't light it again.lovely comfy beds, spotlessly clean, welcome pack and treasure hunt a nice touch.food in graze on the green so good and our meal in the coach inn, highly recommended.Sunday late afternoon we drove to the lion inn at blakey ridge and that was also brilliant.did some great walks from cottage.great weekend had by all!

We stayed here for one week from 25th August 2017 with our three boys and their partners. The Chaple has everything you need and is situated just inside the beautiful village of Rosedale Abbey. It is clean and decorated in a traditional country style to a very high standard. There is a satalite tv, dvds to watch maps and information on local beautiful walks, along with a real log fire. All rooms have great views over the surrounding area. Although the hotel in the village has closed there are two local pubs that serve fantastic food to takeaway or eat in at realistic prices.
This holiday let is a credit to its owners.

Stayed for 5 days in this beautiful chapel. Plenty of space for 4 generations plus a day visit from the in-laws. Beautiful scenery through every window and walks straight out of the front door. Good food in local pubs and only a 40 minute drive to Whitby for fish and chips!
The welcome pack was a lovely surprise and my children especially enjoyed the treasure hunt - especially when we found there was REAL treasure.
The owner was most helpful and gave loads of information about both the house and surrounding area.
I would highly recommend this cottage to anyone and will stay again

We stayed there in august 2012 as a family, six of us, plus a family friend. At the outset, if no one reads any more, not for anyone who is not fully mobile (lots of steps) (or young children, windows open at floor level) and anyone who is not used to reading lots of signs everywhere in the house. We were met with a welcome pack, a bottle of champagne, and a pack of biscuits (elsewhere with Sykes Cottages we have been met with eggs/bread/milk/tea bags etc.,)., and with wood, coal and fire lighters for the open fire. The cooker is nearly an aga, and electric, which needs to be on 24/7 to be of any use it really does take some getting used to (it does warm the place) although we managed a full Sunday roast meal (meat was brought to the place frozen) and meals most days on a wing and a prayer, once something is boiling on top it is rather hard to simmer it (takes ages to heat up or cool down). The owner is very friendly and chatty when ringing about the key, and to be honest, does try to explain the cooker's good and bad points. The property has been furbished to quite high standards with off peak radiators around the place (and a little worrying torches everywhere for power cuts) and is ideally situated for a never ending number of walks commencing in and around the village of Rosedale abbey (and not that far from Whitby). The village is a good place to stay and we, as a family, were united in our praise of the village and would return to the place again. The local abbey Stores (2/3 mins walk) is stocked with everyday essentials but not for foodstocks for a full cooked meal. It was a shame that this modern converted property did not have all its lights working (not the bulbs, clearly a fuse or wiring problem) and that the cooker hood had no fan control (switch long since departed), for the price paid one expects all to be fully functional. On the whole enjoyed our break and laughs about how long the cooked breakfast was taking (or how quick it was). Lots of videos there ... and before I forget, no mobile signal but 'free' wifi'.

We had a lovely break at the Old Methodist Chapel. It's been recently refurbished to a very high standard so was a real pleasure to stay in. We visited in November, but the range cooker in the kitchen and the open fire in the large living room ensurered a cosy stay. Comfort and cleanliness really are top notch, although it would get a little crowded if you had someone sleeping in every bed! The property is very well managed, with everything you need there for you on arrival - just make sure you bring plenty of food - it's a long way to the nearest supermarket! Only downside for summer stays is the lack of garden, but Rosedale abbey is so quiet and beautiful it doesn't really matter. Highly recommended.
