Doonreagan is an historic country retreat with a strong literary tradition, situated on the Wild Atlantic Way, in a spectacular location at the foot of Cashel Hill, overlooking a sheltered bay of the Atlantic Ocean. Beautifully secluded in the small village of Cashel, the property is within easy reach of popular resorts Roundstone and Clifden with numerous shops, bars and restaurants. Two renowned luxury hotels and the local pub are within a mile.
While hill-walking and swimming can be enjoyed on the doorstep, sandy beaches, fishing, sailing, golf, and horse-riding are in the area. Doonreagan also has the added facility of a capacious reading room with access to the owners' private library, comprising some three thousand books, from classics to contemporary fiction and a wide range of non-fiction. There are also facilities to play bridge, chess, backgammon and other board games.
Alternatively, the reading room can also be used as a conference facility, or for workshops, seminars and other group activities. Three individually designed self-contained units are available to rent all year round, for single occupancy, couples, families or larger groups (up to twelve people can be accommodated at any one time).
Apart from offering good opportunities for recreation in surroundings of outstanding natural beauty, Doonreagan provides an ideal setting for inspired creative work. Among the many artists who have favoured Cashel over the years are Lucian Freud, Paul Newman, Claire Bloom and Rod Steiger, aswell as Bono and The Edge. Former Poet Laureate Ted Hughes is on record saying that it was whilst living at Doonreagan in the 1960's that he made his big breakthrough – in his writing and in everything to do with himself. The present owners, Lord and Lady Roden, are both writers of distinction.
