Lough Derg Escape: Tipperary

Experience an extraordinary lakefront vacation rental at this Victorian mansion magically positioned within some 25 acres on the shores of the Bay, with a boathouse and direct access to Lough Derg.

Discerning clients seeking a memorable Irish vacation will relish the alluring waterfront position off Lough Derg and Ireland's famous Shannon river.

Both The Estate House and mature Victorian gardens afford breathtaking vistas over wildflower meadows to the vast expanses of the lake to the north and well-timbered mature parkland to the south. Arguably the best positioned historic house on Lough Derg there is an overwhelming sense of privacy, the house is hidden deep within its lands only viewable from the water. While private the house is nearby to Dromineer village.

Built-in circa 1863 in the High Victorian Gothic style House comprises 10,904 square feet of accommodation over two storeys and a small basement level. Most attractive with an exposed stone exterior and high-pitched slate roof with a distinctive polychrome pattern on the slates. All the principal rooms offer guests panoramic lake views and benefit from having bright south or west-facing orientation.

The lavish interiors feature generous room proportions, tall ceilings and large windows to provide spacious and bright accommodation. Exquisite features include ornate cornicing and central rose plasterwork, beautiful wide plank timber flooring boards, carved timber architraves to doors and windows complete with the original window shutters.

An impressive arched entrance with electric security gates leads through the post and railed parkland to a gravelled forecourt in front of the house. The gardens surrounding the house retain the original Victorian design with numerous magnificent mature shrubs and trees. There is a seamless link to the broader parkland meadows and to Lough Derg itself. Like within the house, the presence of the lake is omnipresent with carefully placed seating areas throughout the gardens offering commanding and differing water views. A barbeque terrace has a large barbeque pit.

The boathouse has a harbour, and there are two timber pontoons outside, each with seating. Equestrian facilities include a small stable block, a circular sand ménage and post and rail paddock grazing. The stabling is situated nearby to the house, adjacent to a large garage block.

Dromineer village is home to one of the oldest yacht clubs in the world, The Lough Derg Yacht Club founded in 1835. Nearby, Nenagh town offers a variety of shops, pubs and restaurants. Kilteelagh House is 40 minutes drive from Limerick City and less than 2 hours from Dublin. Shannon Airport is less than 1-hour drive from the property.

Lough Derg lies on the navigable River Shannon waterway and offers excellent trout, pike and bream fishing. Canoeing, water-skiing, kayaking, windsurfing, cruising and sub-aqua diving. Towns and villages along the shores provide a wealth of lively pubs, traditional Irish music, bistros and restaurants along with antiquities, art, architecture and crafts.

The surrounding area offers many amenities, including several golf courses within a 30-minute drive. Scenic walks on the Lough Derg Way and cycling routes and mountain bike trails are available.

The most wonderful place for a family retreat. Plenty of room for our group of 14. We already miss our walks and the views of the garden and the lake.

We had a lovely time staying here. It is a huge place, and very relaxing. We look forward to coming again.

We spent a wonderful long weekend! We were 9 adults and 9 children (aged 1yr to 12yrs) and had everything we needed. The house exceeds any expectation as it’s hard to capture its magic in the photos. We felt very at home and received great communication from both Nina (the owner) and Trish (the housekeeper). Trish was also invaluable with local knowledge and suggestions. The house was warm and clean, kitchen was stocked well, there were plenty of fresh towels, WiFi in every room and the house itself is beautiful. The kids all had a ball, playing in the grounds and in the Thuja tree complete with fairy door and wooden animals. There’s a long tree swing and direct access to Lough Derg. We were a few mins from Dromineer village where there is an aqua park during summer months. And there are a handful of nice restaurants in easy reach. I would highly recommend staying here for an extra special experience!

The house far surpassed our expectations (which were pretty high going in based on the prior reviews). The pictures cannot do justice to what a special place this is. There is plenty of space for a large group to spread out and have their own space. The history and decor of the house just added to the enjoyment of our time there. The grounds around the house, from the views of the lake to the various gardens to the lawns to the fairy gardens, are just amazing. Our group of 16 ranged in age from 7 years old to 70's and everyone was in agreement in their love of the accommodations. It is a secluded hideaway that is peaceful and quiet, but still a short walk from the village of Dromineer to visit the cafe, waterpark or pub. Trish was absolutely amazing throughout our entire stay, going above and beyond time and time again to make sure we had what we needed and that we were well looked after. Nina is a great host who also was beyond helpful during our stay. A huge thank you to both of you for helping to make sure it was a 50th wedding anniversary trip my parents and my family will never forget.

Beautiful house in a beautiful location. A group of us celebrated New Years here and would all highly recommend! House is very very comfortable and the kitchen is well stocked which makes it the perfect place to spend a few days with friends.
