Bates Restaurant: Wicklow

Bates Inn opened in 1785 and since then, through various incarnations, Bates has warmly welcomed guests and diners through it’s low, wide front door.

As an inn, a restaurant, a meeting place and an important part of the community of Rathdrum, Bates has maintained standards of excellence that are now a tradition.

Today, the award-winning Bates Restaurant is still building on that tradition: Sumptuous food meticulously prepared to imaginative menus, a wonderful atmosphere in the old, stone-built dining room and a loyal and enthusiastic clientele. We’re not standing still either, with constantly evolving menus, décor and art so there’s always something new to see and taste.

This is why people love Bates Restaurant. Why people come from miles around. Why so many make Bates a highlight of their visit to Glendalough, Powerscourt, Avondale, Laragh and the Wicklow Gap.

Superb meal
Went to Bates for an anniversary dinner. Everything was absolutely delicious. We shared crab claws and chicken wings to start and both were amazing. For dinner I had a special which was tagliatelle with prawns and mussels in a delicious bisque sauce. It was sooo good, should be added to the menu permanently in my opinion! My boyfriend had surf n turf which was also very good. We didnt have any room for dessert unfortunately. Would definitely recommend, everything was so good!

"Great food and ambiance"
We called into this restaurant it was windy and raining outside and what a warm welcome they had a fantastic wood burner glowing.

We had a real Irish warm welcome menu was very appetising lots of local fish dishes and a nice balanced menu for all teast buds.

My husband had the mussels well I have never seen so many mussels for a starter well over 50 they tasted amazing.

We had steak and seafood pasta both delicious.

Defo worth a visit if you are near by or surrounding areas.

Would defo go back if I am in area.

Check winter opening times before you go...

"Really solid service"
Would recommend this restaurant for the service first and foremost. That said, the food was tasty and well-seasoned. So, if I were ever in this neck of the woods again I would go back. Indeed, there seemed to be a number of regulars who were warmly greeted by staff, lending to the cosy atmosphere.

As for the food: the foccacia was incredibly tasty and it was served with brown bread and 2 types of tapenade (olive and tomato). For starters we had the asparagus risotto and crab cakes with aioli mayo. The risotto was super tasty with deliciously good asparagus and prawn.

Mains were fish platter and stuffed chicken. I had the chicken and it was very flavoursome. The sardine on the platter was the best there, I was told. The chunky homemade chips were crispy and wholesome. Other sides were broccoli and potato and vegetables.

Dessert was definitely worth the wait: warm chocolate pudding with hazelnut ice-cream. We shared it as we couldn't have managed a full dessert each.

We had tea and coffee and 2 glasses of wine each with the bill coming in at under 115 euro.

There is an early bird menu with 3 courses at under 30 euro.
So, do check it out if in Rathdrum.

"Great great feed"
I have been to this place now three times. Visited again Easter 19. The food as always is completely on point. They had a few staffing issues this weekend with two waiting staff letting them down meaning we waited slightly longer than was ideal. However we just ordered another bottle of wine and had a great night. Cannot recommend this place highly enough.

A wonderful restaurant, excellent service and the staff were very helpful and friendly. I’m still young, and still have plenty of time to discover new restaurants, but this is definitely the best I’ve been to so far. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a place to eat in the area, and when I’m back in Ireland again I’ll certainly make a trip down to eat here again.
