1826 Adare: Limerick

In Adare Village, there stands a charming whitewashed thatched cottage. You have to stop, for this is in fact 1826 Adare, already an award-winning restaurant and only opened since 2013. Owned and operated by Chef Wade Murphy and his wife Elaine, the food here is fresh, local and is influenced by the rugged Wild Atlantic Coastline.

Wade and Elaine strive to maintain the old world charm and character of the cottage while offering you modern Irish cooking, matched with friendly and attentive service. Seasonal local produce is the foundation of Wade’s food philosophy, so menus change on a monthly basis, and there are blackboard specials such as whole sole, braised meats and so on, changing daily.

Classically trained chef, Wade Murphy, has worked in some of the top kitchens in London, Chicago, Egypt and of course Ireland. A Wexford native with a passion for food from a young age, there was never really any doubt what career path Wade would follow. Elaine herself has a vast amount of experience in the hospitality industry from Germany, USA and Australia. The marriage of the two backgrounds lends itself perfectly to the award winning establishment of 1826 Adare that they have both worked so hard to create.

Family business, great chef, fine casual dining! Located right across the street from Dunraven Arms Hotel, this small, family run restaurant served the best food we had on our trip! It was a group dinner with a prix fixe menu but everything we had was amazing! I started with a fried cod dish that was just small pieces of golden deliciousness. I like my fried fish small for that perfect "fish to crunchy batter" ratio and they delivered! The other choice was a salad. I don't remember what was in it but it looked gorgeous. For the main, I had steak...the first piece of meat that hadn't been cooked to death since my trip began! Well seasoned and tender. Their roasted potatoes and veg (for the table) were incredible! Dessert was creative and just enough after a big meal. From the gracious service to the quaint, low ceiling, long community table ambience...it was an amazing experience from beginning to end. This chef really knows his was around a kitchen! Dine here! You will thank me..especially after the roasted potatoes!

"5 star restaurant" Top class restaurant in every way..the most professional of staff and the best eating experience we've had in some time..the fish pie here is nothing short of sensational and inspirational in equal measure!! We will return.

"Breathtaking! Definitely deserves the Michelin mention" We ordered a variety of dishes and were blown away by every single one of them. They are as delicious as they were beautiful. Definitely worth the price. I was there on a business dinner but can highly recommend the restaurant for a romantic dinner as well.

Excellent food always, never disappoints We've eaten in 1826 on numerous occassions and the food is always excellent, presented very nicely, fresh in season ingredients and never disappoints. It's a gem to have on our door-step. If I coudl mention one opportunity to improve the experience is to have an additional bread option for those who can't eat brown bread with nuts and seeds, bread rolls weren't available or any alternative, just a suggestion.

"Irish food at its best!" My husband and I ate here the night following our meal at the Wild Geese which was superb so we didn't think the food in Ireland could be any better. I must say this place tied the Wild Geese in my opinion. It was such a beautiful restaurant. The decor was modern but relaxing with white washed walls and restful neutral furnishings. The entire meal was gorgeous. I started with the monkfish scampi which was wonderful. The batter was light and crispy, the monkfish tender and flavorful with an interesting aioli made with chives and roast garlic. I am not a fan of aiolis in general but this one converted me. It complimented the monkfish scampi perfectly. For my main, I ordered a special which was pan seared turbot over a chick pea ragout. It was really wonderful - classy yet rustic. Fish was cooked perfectly and paired well with the smokiness of the ragout. Really loved this dish. My husband ordered the halibut which was out of this world - I tasted it and the sauce was amazing with clams, lemon and butter. I almost - but not quite- wished I ordered the halibut. For dessert, I had the brûlée which was not too sweet and just right with a lovely crackly exterior. I highly recommend this restaurant!!
