Rosapenna Hotel & Golf Resort: Donegal

Golfers have been travelling to Rosapenna since the late 19th century when the Old Tom Morris Links was ranked 3rd in the British Isles behind only The Old Course at St.Andrews and The Royal County Down Golf Club. With the addition of the hotel soon after the Old Tom Morris Links opened in 1893 Rosapenna is the true first golf resort in the world. In 2003 Rosapenna opened the second course the Sandy Hills Links designed by Pat Ruddy of The European Club fame.

In its relatively short lifetime, the Sandy Hills Links has been met with rave reviews and steadily climbed the rankings as it matures into one of the worlds finest modern links courses. Both the Old Tom Morris Links and Sandy Hills Links are ranked in the Top 50 of Golf Digest Ireland’s Top 100 Courses. The Sandy Hills Links was ranked No. 11 in Golf Worlds Top 100 courses in Ireland List 2015.

2021 will see the reimagined St Patrick's Links by Tom Doak opening to the public in late June. Tom & his team have breathed new life into this spectacular site along Tramore Beach. Originally encompassing 36 holes, Tom has fashioned 18 unrecognisable and unforgettable holes over the same tract of land. The result? A sprawling links that is destined to become a modern great. The routing takes golfers on a journey through huge dunes, to high above Sheephaven Bay, along the coast, then back over some more gentle dunes... and that's just the front nine! With plenty of width and an eclectic mix of naturalised bunkers, the course is unlike anything in the UK & Ireland... or anywhere else for that matter.

"Excellent Golf Destination and Hotel"
My friend and I were looking for a second location to stay for 3 rounds of golf after our first stop in the Portrush area. We selected Rosapena because we knew the golf would be good but until we got there we had no idea how nice the hotel was. We each had a very nice, comfortable and spacious room, all the staff were extremely helpful and friendly, the bar was really nice and the dining room was outstanding. Both breakfast and dinner were unbelievably good. We played the 2 courses at Rosapena, conveniently located within walking distance then our third round was a twenty minute drive to Portsalon, a hidden gem of a links course. We loved the golf and everything about our stay at the hotel. We highly recommend it. I hope we can return soon.

"Northern Ireland’s gem"
I have stayed in this hotel for a business trip 6 years ago. Ever since I wanted to come back to this spot and enjoy the breathtaking landscape around Downings and the service at the hotel. It finally worked all out this August and I stayed 10 days at the Rosapenna hotel.

This time, I had a slightly bigger room with everything I could have asked for. The bed was super comfortable, the shower nice and warm after a day on the links courses.

I have been treated like I’m the queen around the hotel and the golf course. The food and service was fantastic and I can’t wait to come back and enjoy the view from their windows.

"Fantastic trip"
Big thanks to the Team at YourGolfTravel for recommending Rosapenna to our fourball, I have to admit the location left us a little concerned having to Driving 2 hours from Belfast Airport......
But it was well worth the trip, being avid links fans we were not disappointed.
Old Tom Morris, Sandy Hills and Portsalon Golf Links, where do we start.....all 3 courses were in great condition and really very busy, yet we still managed to play in 4 hours each time.
The hotel was an ideal base and we found everyone so friendly, big thanks to Andrew for looking after us quite late arriving to the restaurant after we snuck in another 9 on the Old Tom course.
All in all a great 4 days, we’ll be back!!!!

"Close to perfection in Donegal"
Working in central Dublin, trips to rural Ireland are always something that I look forward to. As a golfer, my stay at Rosapenna in Donegal has to go down as one of the best I have experienced and I have travelled to some of the finest golf resorts in Europe.

On arrival there is a welcome that I have come to expect in Donegal. Friendly faces and smiles and there is no shortage of staff willing to help in any way they can. I travelled with my partner who is a non golfer and we stayed in on of the ‘Bay View Suites’. The view from the balcony is stunning and an evening taking in the view with a cold drink, you can feel like you are the only person on earth!

I played both Sandy Hills and Old Tom Morris and on a third day travelled to the fantastic Portsalon Golf Club which is just a short drive away. The hotel is buzzing with international golfers from New Zealand to America and everywhere in-between. The courses are spectacular and a true test of links golf.

My partner spent time walking the beautiful beach and visiting the quaint village of Downings where local businesses such as McNutts tweed offers a perfect location to buy gifts and see where the world famous Donegal Tweed originates.

Food in the hotel is excellent from breakfast to dinner and we loved the entertainment in the evenings. Local seafood is always a pleasure to see on a menu and you can tell that they take real pride in their menu. Presentation, flavour and value were all excellent on each evening we dined in the hotel. They had a piano player who’s name I wish I had taken and he was a real entertainer! On one of the evenings we made the short walk into Downings and had a beautiful meal in the Grape and Grain which I would also happily recommend.

This was a memorable stay and I cant wait to return.

Amazing stay at Rosapenna Golf Resort
Just back from a short summer break in Rosapenna..

I must say we really enjoyed both of the great golf courses that they have at their possession, also may I add, both in great condition and an absolute joy to play..

The Resort was buzzing with people playing in Open Week, and the Hotel was also busy with people staying in there and it was a joy to be present in such a fantastic week..

Spent an afternoon relaxing on the Pavilion Patio, looking out over the Valley Nine on the Old Tom Morris Links, absorbing the sunshine overlooking I think is called Tramore Beach..

The Hospitality from the very first moment I checked into the resort was brilliant.. There was always staff on hand to help with whatever query or question we had.. It was brilliant..

Hoping to get back before they close for the Winter Season in October.....A Resort that possesses Links Golf at its finest!!!
