Estrela Basilica or Royal Basilica and Convent of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is a basilica and ancient Carmelite convent in late baroque and neoclassical style. Construction started in 1779 and the basilica was finished in 1790. The Estrela Basilica was the first church in the world dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The Estrela Garden was created in the mid-nineteenth century, in front of the Basilica, in the style of English gardens, of romantic inspiration. The garden has 4.6 hectares and was officially opened in 1852. During the second half of the nineteenth century, the Estrela Walk (Passeio da Estrela) was a very trendy place. The garden now has a cafe, beautiful flowerbeds, various pieces of statuary and a children playground. One of the central points of the garden is green iron bandstand where musicians play in the summer.

The Palace of Saint Bento is the home of the Assembly of the Republic, the Portuguese parliament. It is located close to Bairro Alto and Lapa neighbourhoods. The Palace has historically been the seat of the former Portuguese parliaments, such as the National Assembly during the regime of New State, the Congress of the Republic during the First Republic, and the Cortes during the Constitutional Monarchy. Nearby is the official residence of Portuguese Prime Minister.

Lapa neighbourhood is a prime residential zone of Lisbon and where many foreign Embassies are located.
